The magic begins when the acoustic twangy guitar notes makes its way through to your soul permitting the pores on your skin give way for the hair to stand on ends, you call it goosebumps we call it feeling the rhythm and melody soul and body. The Intro already invites the listener to know what they are getting into an all African sound and having a brief knowledge of the artist’s trajectory. This is one those artists who have found their sound and is consistent on it with a voice that isn’t scared to pierce the veil while paying attention to the commercial appeal and working towards exporting mainstream.

Are you a lover? How do you show love? How do you even go about defining love when you are stocked in mere words without actions to back it up? Putting me in a LOVER’S DILEMMA Yeah? The funky instrumentation which has on its back-guitar notes and constant tam tam resounding effortlessly as the artist invites you into her LOVE WORLD recounting her experiences.

It’s a lover’s dilemma, do you love regardless or do you seek for actions to the words Oh! AFFAIRE D’AMOUR how you found yourself swirled by the country side melodies of drums, guitar and the whistling ignites this feeling of the amazon and outdoor vast landscape vibe. Love affair makes you obviously wonder far and wide, the artist doesn’t wait for you to savor the melodies as she dives right into dishing out the advice she has for lovers in French Language proving her versatility and flexibility in embracing two communities, the sound you would play when going I the wild for an adventure of when hearts are beating each to each on freshly shave green growth for a picnic.

NA MALA is just one of the unique Makossa vibes with heavy influence of Salsa instruments, here the bass guitar blends with a faint sound of the piano, the lyrics are even deeper that the instrumentation put together, stressing on the importance of what you have, all about value and remaining true to what you love regardless of the pressures life offers to. We are swept off our feet as the music fades away with African chants of high-pitched vocals.

When you value what you have as NA MALA says the outside world would obviously see that as DU JAMAIS, yet another sound with heavy Makossa influence, full employment of the drums and strings bass guitar, then at one point there’s this persistent but low key sound of what appears to be the echoing sound of an empty calabash. One thing about the artist creative direction is she has a great mastery of Love and romantic songs; one might think the inspiration is borne out of experiences as it seems not to be running out of ideas. A great deal of the songs in her discography are centered around the theme of Love and the Afrocentric romance.

We are diving into the core of the BLACK GIRL MAGIC the artist goes hard on the sling back beats with Wimbum mother tongue and pidgin English in dominance which makes it relatable and original. The sound here actually reflects a bit of the Mexican – Latino trumpeting and fluting but ever sounding and Spanish guitar.

When you experience true love everyday seems like a whole new day to fall in love once again and not having to look at yesterday, AMA FALLING and ama keep falling in love every time, the sound slightly drifts away from the makossa vibe as it embraces a more danceable and livelier tune. More like a lover unite anthem meant to rekindle fading love and resurface pleasant memories. The song has this unique vibe that would always want you going for more even when it has elapsed. Her voice with that of her brother MUSS blends in harmony for full ecstasy.

Anyways when love hits you hard and you are falling in love all over again, give in and JUST DO YOU the vibe around this tune has this rock star RnB heavy metallic instrumentation. This is you actually remaining steadfast to what you believe in irrespective of what the outside world says or thinks. It conveys a message of Believing in Yourself reason its heavy in delivery and beats to stress on the authoritative aspect.

When you LOVE A PLAYER be ready for the aftermath once again the artist migrates to the love arena as she invites Africa’s hardest femcee Askia drop some hardcore verses. The kind of sound you come across in the movies, movies that paints the theme of revenge, regret, pain and endurance. ASKIA actually empties her pain in the lyrics and projects her real-life experiences evidently revealed in her tone and choice of words, this cuts across realities of the 21st century relationships where infidelity is topping the ante.

Yeah, the TO LOVE A PLAYER is to sacrifice your body but hold up! WETI PERSON DO? How she switches up the pitch brings chills down your spine the transition to “Person go die ooo oohhh” deep connotation stresses on the magnitude of the message conveyed. You actually feel it deep, like a cold dagger put around your throat. Before we even get enough of the lyrics Cleo Grae jumps in and spits fire verses the free-flowing story telling rap that can suit any kind of beat. Its all about love, love, love.

CONTROLLER yet another love song, seems like the artist wants us to understand she seemingly runs mad when it comes to love, a cross section of the tracks on this body of work rest on the THEME of love. The song is a very danceable one, has this club type of vibe or mostly consumed on extreme loud volume and in best consumed in public gatherings.

AFFAIR D’AMOUR resurfaces but this time around with an extra energy in the person of LYDOL , as she drops a few slam rap verses because emitting melodies straight out of the vocal cord, the song fades away with a few slam verses and you seemingly feel a little rumba and ndombolo blend- Maybe!

Before you hustle and start living LA VIDA LOCA never forget where you come from, this Afro Jazz and Makossa fusion, wavy and it reminisces the time. Music of the 80s resurfaced with a mélange of present-day instrumentation. The producer exercises his production prowess in bridging the gap between old and new school music and we are privileged to have a taste of relics and antics, for those who have lived both eras it arouses this nostalgic feeling and once again being part of the moment.

IYORI drifts away from the list of love thematic songs as it dives into a more energetic and danceable tune. It’s all about fun inclined and party projecting summer vibe, it introduces a new flavor and more of the invisible extra flair the artist possesses in her honey pot where she keeps Deeping her fingers to bring out the sweetness every time. IYORI oh! Light up your energy tonight!

JOHNNY WAKA is more of the indoor room vibe, the one you would put on your dancing shoes and illuminate the dancefloor. The instrumentation is a fading metallic room tempo because the vocals of the artist seems to have been submerge in the instrumentation making the feeling quite different, more like resounding echoes.

TO LOVE A PLAYER introduces Assiko folkloric sound and blend of Bikutsi, a typical traditional piece of instruments put together and refined, very danceable quite different from the first version however the theme remains same.

TAPSI has the heavy influence of the African drums, gongs and rattle batons, flutes, this one screams AFRICA! The tweeting sounds of jungle birds, the Amazon air breaths through the instrumentation which blends with the dulcet voice of the artist pure to human. This song breaths hope, better days ahead more like the HAKUNA MATATA phrase brought to life delivered in pidgin English and French language.

The album is nothing short of sounds of Africa as it presents a myriad of rhythms and melodies merged into music that suites the soul just like Africa Panacea that seems to be an antidote or ailment for every malice that’s the MAGIC this black girl’s voice and lyrics brings to the body and soul. The Afro Jazz genre lies as the foundation to her artistry while employing Makossa which has been very evident and other sounds peculiar to Cameroon ethnic groups and cultures. The album is still available for consumption on all digital music streaming platforms.

I’m sitting on my working desk pondering, flipping a thousand pages in my head, pages of books I’ve been able to go through since I became conscious about the things of life as a teenager right up to this hour. Drowning deep in thoughts more like a trance and it occured to me many Cameroonians aren’t living intentionally. So I captioned this as the “Cameroonian Dream” but is there such a thing as a Cameroonian Dream?
I do know everyone had their personal dreams when growing up, we often resounded it until it became fun, always aiming for the big titles and positions in society. Then you begin to flip through calendars as years go by: the passion dies down naturally and the excitement gradually fades away until you have no clue about what you want in life.

You can’t discover your purpose, you can’t define your essence, everything seems blur as you see more light, you are convinced life is HARD. I agree with you from your perspective life seems very unfair but life being generally unfair to everyone actually makes life fair : the fact it doesn’t discriminate life is life and when you reach at the stage of flowing with the tides and toasted against your will by life’s waves and currents be assured “life happens” You and I know dreams come true, but we forget in a hurry nightmares are dreams too, when hoping for the best it’s equally okay to expect the worst, that’s why it’s important to aim for the moon so in case you miss you might land for the stars, anyways all of them shine bright – how ironical it is it comes through only in your darkest of moments to illuminate your path.

So what is the Cameroonian Dream? The dream every passionate youth had as a teenager, going through basic regular education as everyone ordinary child. Getting enrolled at the secondary level, through high school then obtaining every necessary certificate to further studies or Higher education. Then a period of three years or less presents you with the most flooded degree of our time, a big smile on your face as you match and parade in your graduation robe momentarily the best day of your life! I put it to you. Year in and out thousands of youths graduate but where do they go to?

At the back of your mind you have figured out what kind of job you’re going in for, the very lucrative ones especially if it’s the white-collar jobs where you won’t settle for less. Then your ultimate dreams starts transforming into that nightmare when the burning desire to be part of the working class diminishes as your effortlessly drop applications seeking for a job and it ends in a sham. It’s inevitable you join the queue of job seekers then it occurs to you in a flash you are living the reality of “Chomage” a word you have been familiar with throughout your educational formation but you didn’t pay particular interest to cause of course nobody wants to identify with negativity. At that moment frustration creeps in you watch the news, you observe the society and the environment you live in, then your consistently curse the government for all your mishaps and misery. At least you have everyone to blame but yourself so the burden doesn’t way on you entirely ,you have somewhere to brush off the pressure , dump your hurt, filth and failures unapologetically.

That’s the first dream, living right, undergoing education, getting employed earning high, starting a home and then retiring happy and fulfilled.

Then comes another dream which is quite similar to the one above but the slide difference is that , after all the “chomage” you are not comfortable sitting and cursing the government with no major changes but you decide to search for greener pastures elsewhere. You then “fall bush” – “anywhere but not Cameroon”, that’s the thought that keeps resounding in your head until you eventually leave. I don’t know much about green growth but one thing I do know is the grass is never really greener on the other side, it actually appears greener or if it really is ,then it’s because the owner spends time watering it, unless watering yours is not an option that will be my suggestion.

You’re now overseas the goal is to make money, come back home and invest, settle down or possibility of staying in the said country until you gain nationality then it’s still okay to curse the government and why not the entire country from there? Another dream! Then there’s the nightmare which is seemingly becoming the ideal dream. Sometimes the wrong choices provide best solutions but it doesn’t change the fact it was a wrong move. What do you do then in a complex society? You have to do what you have to do to survive.

That’s how life fucked up everything and tend the whole game sideways until you become part of a convulated system you signed in it without your will but didn’t sign up for. Youths now are engaged in quick money generating schemes, indulged in the inexplicable meager petty jobs which would have never been an option or a topic of discussion in your earlier days of job seeking. We are losing each new generation to juvenile delinquency as it has become the new way of life, if you don’t blend in then you are not living. That’s the third dream, who knew the nightmare was the dream that would come true?

The “Cameroonian dream” was just a dream, your reality and my reality aren’t the same- the dreams are never really the same even if they are , there are different routes in making them come true. But I do know there are dreamers in Cameroon who have made it happen and are still making it happen, when you realize nobody will make it happen for you and it’s all on you then you will realize there’s nothing like the Cameroonian dream.

I believe the “Cameroonian dream” is simply you believing that your dreams can come to life by your own efforts, it’s dependent on you in a country where everything and anything is possible to start with. You can make it if you chose, my dream doesn’t have to be your dream in order for the dream to be valid and come true, that’s the Cameroonian dream. Self realization that no one will help you unless you try, self orientation that you are chasing your desires and your interest and not being limited by the system, because everyone is involved doesn’t make it right. The dream is you doing you, go home with this thought “If you can make it Cameroon, you can make it anywhere- The Cameroonian dream”

Longlive those who are honest enough to say 25 SO NO DEY! in this complicated, complex Entertainment Industry. Every Industry has it’s loopholes and setbacks but it becomes more dangerous when you enumerate it’s weaknesses vis a vis it’s strengths and the former outweighs the latter. One major enemy the industry fights in it’s everyday superficial battle that lies central to it’s activities is PRIDE, shall be propounded in the subsequent paragraphs.

The mass/audience [Fans, showbiz lovers, media personalities, Industry stakeholders] cry out

Celebrities don’t do giveaways, they don’t acknowledge supporters of arts, they are stingy, they ignore posts and won’t react, they will always ignore the positive but the day your bring a negative point that might spark a controversy they will jump all over you like uncontrolled semens jerked off from a d!ck that has attained satiety. They generally shy away from initiatives and schemes that might entail financial support with the pretext of a busy schedule or allocated budget. The actual truth is 25 SO NO DEY! but they won’t admit.

Oh my God you my favourite artist, you inspire me so much in life, I do music so someday I could be like you hoping that you can be my mentor and give me tips to be succesful and rich in my music career as you are. That phrase is the reason why these celebrities will disappear like a Molyko slay Queen after you have bought her roasted fish for 1000frs and a bottle of Origin. Do you know why? Because 25 SO NO DEY!

Most musicians will prefer to stay on their lane, at their pace without accepting collaborations or soliciting collaborations because they won’t want a 3rd party to infiltrate their personal space and find them battling with their insecurities, their flaws and in ability to reflect and represent the perception of the public and brand image physically. It’s easier to find a musician here collaborating with a foreigner than one of their own, for reasons that both parties may see the emptiness of each other’s portfolios and may use it against the other in the long-run. So they prefer to act BIG and established but 25 SO NO DEY!

The unending warfare that exists between the upcoming artists and established artists in their quest for validation and recognition only ends in tears. The youngsters expect much from the supposed A lists who are superior in terms of music making and visibility hoping they might extend a helping hand to boost their careers but the verdict is futile. With no shows in sight, no endorsement deals, no tours, no side hustle it might be difficult to extend a hand but will it come out clear? No because 25 SO NO DEY!

Funny how it becomes a whole seismic event when fellow neighboring Entertainment industries don’t validate our existence, you should be asking who put them in charge of validation and secondly not what have you done, rather what are you doing to get the validation? Don’t cite legends who have musically placed Cameroon on the map that’s the industry dwelling on past glories, rather the goal is to take-over the Batten of continuity and continue the race by growth and progress in unison. Identifying those making a genuine difference and giving out genuine support.

There are some issues that plague the industry but one that slowly but surely kills is PRIDE and it’s safe to say being an entertainer in Cameroon only gives you fame and no money. Partly due to greed from the entertainer’s corner and lack of incentive to support from the audience. We are in this together and the way out is creative a conducive atmosphere for reciprocated support. That means last last nor, for the end na all we go shame because 25 SO NO DEY!

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣

The “support your own” has probably been the most abused phrase in the Cameroon Entertainment Industry for quite some time now, if you will have to voice it out or inscribe on a social media post, be ready to get castigated or slap fit follow. A good number of people hide behind the phrase in need of favors and often use it as a free to ticket for guaranteed help, the action is now redundant hence rendering the whole strategy futile and boring. Practically support your own is a concept far fetched in terms of helping because our industry understands this in three noticeable ways.

𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙗𝙮 𝘼𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮

It’s like supporting what I relate with, a profound natural likeness for an artist’s arts over another based on personal preferences. We get that a lot in the industry from bloggers, promoters, influencers, TV hosts, Media figures and a great number of personalities interwoven in showbiz related matters. This kind of support comes naturally and grows personal when there are sentimental attachments nurtured by connectivity and interactivity. Most often, the artists [Musicians, Actors, models, designers, artists] who don’t fall in that space feel left out which may affect their careers in one way or the other drastically.

𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙗𝙮 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮

This is the most common form of support the Industry witnesses on a daily. It incorporates bias, tribalism and to an extend discrimination. In as much as we try not to admit this support system is primarily backbone by tribalism attachments or culture identification.A case study and survey has stipulated : The Nso community in the industry has proven beyond doubts their own will always come first before the rest can follow in terms of support both online and offline. This kind of support involves all categories of showbiz audience [The emitter, perceivers, opinion leaders ]

𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡

This kind of support is more dangerous than the other support systems because it encompasses a lot of other aspects, 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅, 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘆, 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻. This type support is very common among our musicians and celebrities on this platform. A lot demonstrate fake love so as to bypass backlashes from fans and the media, I support your arts so you intend support mine, I support your arts because you just got recognized for an award [stepping in to say congratulations so not to feel inferior when I couldn’t share your arts/works before the nomination] that’s why strangers support you more than people you know because the people you know might have a tough time accepting you come from the same place, but they are still in the same place.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙎𝙐𝙋𝙋𝙊𝙍𝙏 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙊𝙒𝙉 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮.

After highlighting the three different categories of the support your own concept, it will be difficult to mobilize people to change their narratives and perspective about what they consume musically or direct their energy to. In depth analysis with a logical eye will allow you with the thought that support your own local music or arts doesn’t make sense. If we look at things critically Cameroonians have been consuming home made music and a larger faction in recent times have given much value to arts produced here, but obviously there’s something still lacking. Living in the digital era where things have been made easier in terms of content sharing and accessibility, what our content creators [Musicians and actors] need to do more is do a feasibility study together with their management teams and see how to push and promote their songs and music pieces outside Cameroon.

Musically our lyrical content has been kept within the frontiers of Cameroon and can’t really breakthrough to penetrate the Entertainment sphere of our neighboring countries and beyond. Until these persons are ready to make these changes by either creating new strategies, innovating old ones or a total disruption in their music promotion strategies ,they will keep doing music for home base consumption without realizing and continue to rely on SUPPORT YOUR OWN for an ultimate exposure breakthrough. Looking at it from a deeper perspective Support your own does not make sense, if the industry as a whole realizes the need to give value and respect to technical personnel it will be another generational plague ,it’s not about the ratio or population because if you have to critically look at it, we have been supporting our own all this while.

One of the principal problems that lies central to this unending music war fare is; 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁.Back to memory lane when Salatiel was picked up to feature in Beyonce’s Lion King Album and a cross section of Nigerian blogs omitted Salatiel’s name in their articles and blog posts, this eventually sparked a lot of controversies as well as instigated the conscious effort by some industry players to curb the influx of Nigerian songs on the shores of Cameroon. Cameroon has nothing more to prove to the world musically that we are relevant and consistent, what we need to do more is get out of our comfort zones, work on the song promotions, digitalize our moves via branding and partnerships. This is the actual truth after having been approached by some Nigerian Industry music media players, their answers were simple “Your own doesn’t support your own because they don’t network and widen their scope of influence

” Support your own, support our own ! but how do we support our own when our own don’t support the course by supporting themselves?
